Julia began her career with mothers and children at the young age of 12 when she took a CPR and First Aid course at the local hospital and began babysitting the neighborhood children. She completed both her assistant preschool teaching certificate as well as her EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certificate while in high school and worked her way through university teaching preschool part-time. She earned her preschool teachers certificate at community college while studying biology, literature, anthropology and language studies at UC Santa Cruz.
Upon realizing that she was not interested in a career in academics, which was where her studies were taking her, she left UCSC and pursued her certification in swedish massage. After working as a massage therapist in a chiropractors office for over a year, Julia began working with pregnant women and earned her certification in Pregnancy for the Childbearing Year from the renowned Kate Jordan.
It was the birth of her nephew in 2000 which lead her to begin doula and midwifery training, first through DONA, then through Elizabeth Davis’ Heart and Hands Midwifery training. She was blessed to support mothers at hospitals, at home and in free-standing birth centers.
Training and working in Northern California, a very pro-natural-everything sort of place, did not prepare her for the birth culture of Istanbul, Turkey. Before long, she began to see that her philosophy of knowledge, empowerment and “if you want it enough, you’ll get it” was not only not working, was actually traumatizing the families she was working with. So she sought to deepen her understanding of birth and birth prepartation through training with Birthing From Within.
Her epic journey through birth and into herself now finds Julia the mother of a beautiful boy and the founder of the first doula training in Turkey. She is blessed daily to be part of providing an ever-growing number of women and families with honest and wholistic doula support and childbirth preparation.
